Enjoying a Perfect Vacation in Grosseto

Grosseto is one of most beautiful cities in Tuscany, Italy. It is rich with twelve centuries of history and is a terrific spot to spend a holiday.

It is not as popular as some of the other cities in Tuscany, which actually makes it a terrific spot for travelers. Grosseto offers visitors the chance to see real Tuscan culture without dealing with hordes of tourists.

Grosseto's architecture is not to be missed. The city's famed fortified walls were built in the 12th to 14th century, though in the 16th century, the original walls were replaced with the massive hexagonal walls that still stand in Grosseto today. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is another top tourist attraction. Its distinctive striped appearance comes from alternating layers of black and white marble, and its bell tower dates back to 1402.

The Museum of Maremma Archaeology and Art is home to many famous paintings and historical artifacts, including Etruscan urns from the ancient town of Roselle. Art lovers and history buffs will enjoy a full-day at this three-floored museum.

Be sure to head over to the Piazza Dante as well to catch a glimpse of the Canapone monument. This sculpture shows the Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine crushing the head of snake. The artist said it represents the malaria that came to the area and wiped out much of the population in the 1800s.

There are lots of great shops in Grosseto, so finding some souvenirs to take home with you will be a breeze. The main street for shopping is Corso Carducci. The street is lined with shops year-round. It also features traveling markets on a regular basis.

Explore nature in the surrounding area. Grosseto's breathtaking beauty is unmistakable. The best place to take in the views is from the Parco Regionale della Maremma. This nature reserve covers 98 square kilometers and features several different geographical zones. It's located to the south of Ombrone River, so you can visit the water, marsh land, or sand dunes within the reserve. It's a great spot for couple or families who love the great outdoors.

There is a wealth of things to see and do in Tuscany so renting a holiday home in Grosseto is a smart decision. This allows for a longer stay and gives visitors the feel of living like a local while on vacation. Bring your spouse or the whole family for an exciting and educational trip.
