Abelines Gaard

Abelines Gaard – Step into West Jutland’s Living History
Visit Abeline – In the Wreck Master’s House
The ticking of a clock blends with the soft clatter of knitting needles. Abeline sits in her chair, watching the winding gravel path while managing the telephone exchange – the only one for miles along Holmsland Klit. Suddenly, there’s a knock at the door. A neighbor has come to make a call.
Travel Back in Time on Denmark’s Rugged West Coast
Stepping into Abelines Gaard, the listed farmstead of the former wreck master, is like stepping into another era. Although Abeline no longer waits with coffee and her knitting, it feels as if she has just stepped out for a moment.

A Historic Farm Full of Coastal Stories
Abelines Gaard is one of the best-preserved long dune farms on Holmsland Klit. Built between 1854 and 1871 by Abeline’s father-in-law – the local wreck master – the farm reflects a rich maritime history. His duties included securing wreckage, organizing beach auctions, and sheltering shipwrecked sailors.
Abeline and her husband took over the farm in 1890. After his death in 1904, she ran it alone while raising their five children – right up until her own passing in 1957. As shipwrecks became rarer, Abeline began welcoming summer guests instead.

The Haurvig Rescue Station
On the grounds of Abelines Gaard stands the historic Haurvig rescue station, complete with a boathouse, rocket shed, and a small telephone hut. The local rescue team trained here four times a year. Though fewer accidents occurred here than along other parts of the Jutland coast, 15 rescue missions saved 64 lives – all using rocket-based life-saving gear. The rescue boat, now restored and on display, was never launched.
In July and August, visitors can watch a historic rescue drill every Wednesday.

Coffee House and Museum Shop
Today, the former residence hosts a cozy coffee house where fresh coffee and homemade cake are served in an atmosphere true to Abeline’s time. Next door, the museum shop offers carefully selected souvenirs and refreshing drinks.

Abelines Gaard is part of the Ringkøbing Fjord Museums. These museums narrate engaging stories about people's lives through the ages and the shaping of the landscape.
