Westkapelle is surrounded by water to the north, west and south and is protected by the dunes and the sea dike. The sea dike shows the great contrast between water and land. Tourists like to climb up to enjoy the breathtaking views. The waves, passing ships and fantastic sunsets are always fascinating. If you turn around, you will see the characteristic red roofs of the village, always a fascinating picture. Most of the houses were built during the reconstruction in the 1950s. The pre-war Westkapelle was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. The sea dike was bombed by the Allies in October 1944 to liberate Walcheren. Through the bomb hole created in the dike, the sea had free flow into the village, which, among other things, led to the creation of the large lake behind Westkapelle.
