UNESCO World Heritage Site

Jelling is home to some of the most significant monuments from the Viking Age. In 1994, the church, rune stones, and burial mounds were the first sites in Denmark to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Jelling is considered the birthplace of the Danish nation - where the lineage of Danish kings began and the transition to Christianity took place. The names of Gorm the Old, Queen Thyra, and Harald Bluetooth are inextricably linked to this historical development and play a central role in Denmark's history.

The Monument Area

The area around the church, rune stones, and burial mounds is known as the "Monument Area." Covering approximately 20 football fields, it offers numerous opportunities to explore, find a comfortable seat, and take a break. Tables and benches are also available.

There is a particularly impressive viewpoint at the top of the burial mound north of the church. The site is freely accessible at all times; however, for a more in-depth experience, guided tours are recommended.

A special highlight is the roof terrace, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the entire monument site. With modern binoculars, you can also discover what Jelling looked like 1,000 years ago.

Between 2006 and 2013, archaeological excavations uncovered three sides of the palisade, the impressive ship setting, and the remains of houses from the time of Harald Bluetooth. The fourth and final side of the wooden palisade was completed in 2024. Within the area, the burial mounds, the two rune stones, and the church have been visible for more than 1,000 years.

The Rune Stones

Kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth erected their rune stones and built the monuments between approximately 950 and 985—a time of significant social change. Today, the rune stones are housed in display cases to protect them from the weather. In the evening, ceiling lighting is activated to make the runes and images particularly visible.
