The walls were built for defensive purposes and were converted into a pedestrian promenade in the 1800s, becoming a big, public park. Today they are used for strolls, to work out and, during the warm season, they host shows and events. Lucca is, par excellence, a catholic city and has more than 100 churches. The most important ones are San Martino Cathedral, San Frediano Church and San Michele Church. Among the squares and monuments, we recommend you to visit Amphitheatre Square, the towers (Torre Guinigi and Torre delle Ore), the Botanic Garden, and the Guinigi Museum.
