Ringkøbing Museum – History in the Heart of the Old Town

Ringkøbing: Historic Charm Meets Living Museum Culture

Ringkøbing is a picturesque market town dating back to the 15th century. Its cobbled streets, narrow alleys, and beautifully preserved merchant houses bring centuries of history to life.

At Ringkøbing Museum, you’ll find engaging exhibitions, expert-led tours, and a delightful museum shop featuring local crafts and regional specialties.

Powerful WWII Exhibitions

"Flyers in the Night" - this moving exhibition tells the story of British Lancaster bombers flying over Denmark’s west coast during World War II. A life-size replica recreates the sensation of an aircraft roaring overhead, complete with immersive sound effects that capture the drama of these missions – many of which ended in tragedy.

Combining original artifacts, film, audio, and large-scale imagery, the exhibition highlights the human stories behind the crashes near Ringkøbing Fjord.

What the Bunker Hid

Another standout is the exhibition "What the Bunker Hid", centered on a German bunker discovered intact after a 2008 storm. Visitors step inside a reconstructed bunker and watch a compelling film about Gerhard Saalfeld, a German soldier once stationed there. His personal belongings and honest reflections give rare insight into the everyday life of soldiers on the Atlantic Wall.

Explore Local History

In the historic Dommerkontor (Judge’s Office), the exhibition "West Jutland's Little Capital" tells the story of Ringkøbing’s town hall – a central institution from 1849 to 2006. It covers the building's multifaceted role in administration, justice, fire safety, and prison management.

The same building also features a series of historic town portraits, including impressive enlargements of paintings by local artist Jesper Maler. These detailed artworks provide a visual record of Ringkøbing around 1800 – a perfect introduction before heading out on a city walk to see the real-life counterparts of the painted houses.
