Kaj Munk’s Parsonage – Discover History, Literature & Culture

Kaj Munk – Priest, Playwright & Resistance Fighter

Kaj Munk (1898–1944) is regarded as one of Denmark’s most influential cultural figures of the 20th century. Orphaned at an early age on the island of Lolland, he later became parish priest in Vedersø, West Jutland. Alongside his ministry, he rose to prominence as one of Scandinavia’s most frequently performed playwrights.

Outspoken and fearless in his criticism of Nazism, Munk became a symbol of resistance during the German occupation of Denmark. On 4 January 1944, he was taken from his parsonage in Vedersø by Danish collaborators working for the occupying forces and subsequently murdered. His life and work remain enduring symbols of courage, faith, and artistic vision.
