Explore and relax at Lake Como

A holiday home at Lake Como is a great base camp for families looking to explore the Piedmont region and beyond, but Lake Como has plenty to offer on its own. From mountain climbing to esteemed Renaissance architecture, this region is rich with character.

The titular lake around which this region is centered has plenty to offer in its own right. Recognized as one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world, this glacial lake has been prime real estate for the wealthy since the times of ancient Rome.

Sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing are popular pastimes throughout the year, and many of the surrounding farms are open to visitors. If you're looking to show your kids the simple pleasures that come from producing local favorites like olive oil, salami, cheese, and milk, the locals are always happy to welcome you with open arms.

The region has been a place of wealth and opulence for centuries, and many of the original Roman villas are still standing and open for exploration by enterprising visitors. Villa Carlotta, dating back to the late 17th century, is one of the most popular. Its magnificent gardens are still well groomed, and it is home to sculptures by masters like Antonio Canova as well as hosting a museum of agriculture.

It's a refreshingly live opportunity to explore history and a far cry from the sometimes stuffy museums that populate some of Italy's larger and more esteemed cities. Then there's Villa del Balbianello, an estate that's acclaimed for its terraced gardens and its perfect location right along the shore of the lake. Visitors could easily spend weeks exploring the sheer variety of different villas circling the lake's shoreline.

The village of Como is accessible by water ferry, and its classical Renaissance architecture is sure to charm both adults and children alike. If you're looking for a break from the outdoor activities and historical landmarks that the region has to offer, it's a great place to sit down and enjoy modern civilization. The beautiful fountain in the town center is a surefire selling point for the younger crowd, and there are plenty of great restaurants and markets that will appeal to kids as well.

Como also offers easy access to surrounding towns like Bellagio and Varenna.

While there are plenty of family-friendly activities out on the lake proper, there are also plenty of opportunities to go exploring without having to get your feet wet. The mountain of San Primo looms over the lake, and it's dense with plenty of biking and hiking trails.

In the winter, the upper reaches of the mountain serve as a ski lodge, but children should especially love Jungle Raider. This adventure park offers ziplining and a host of other wilderness adventures ideal for older kids.
