It's Easy Being Green in Costa Verde

If you're looking to make Costa Verde your next holiday destination, you won't be disappointed.

The "Green Coast" that lines the western border of Portugal has a multitude of offerings that are sure to delight the entire clan, young and old.

Best of all, it's easy to find an activity that the family can enjoy as a group, without splitting up.

First and foremost: You don't want to miss out on the beaches, which are some of the most stunning in the world. While your holiday home in Costa Verde will be outfitted with all the amenities you might require, with beaches this inviting, you aren't likely to be spending much time indoors.

Mindelo Beach in picturesque Vila Do Conde, is a particularly nice option for younger children, who will enjoy jumping into the water from the high rocks. Be forewarned that the North Atlantic water temperatures can be chilly, so plan accordingly. A wooden walkway provides a lovely vantage point for the gorgeous sunsets.

If there are any surfers in the family, Porto is considered something of a mecca, with waves that are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced riders. Check out B´Surf Porto for a lesson, or let the experienced staff provide you with tips on where to find that perfect set. Board and wetsuit rentals are also available.

Looking for something a little bit drier? Take in the grandeur of the Bom Jesus do Monte, a pilgrimage shrine that features an 18th-century church with an impressive baroque stone staircase. The site is situated atop a tall hill, so it would command spectacular views even without the added benefit of the lovely, historic church. There are buses in the nearby town of Braga that make trips to the shrine every 30 minutes.

Just a short drive inland, lovers of history can explore the Castelo de Guimaraes, located in the town which bears its name. The castle itself, which dates back to the 11th century, is worth the trip all on its own, but visitors should plan on spending some time in Guimaraes itself as well.

With its cobblestone streets, intricate architecture, and flowing fountains, the town presents a myriad of photographic opportunities. Kids and adults alike will be the envy of their social media circles when they've shared a few of the snapshots they'll take here.

Even visitors with very young children will enjoy just poking about the coastline, enjoying the many sights and sounds of this wild and beautiful corner of the globe. With so much fresh air and history surrounding you, you're bound to return to your holiday home rejuvenated and ready to plan the next day's adventures.
