A Peaceful Retreat in Rab

Families looking to kick back and relax in an idyllic little village will find everything they're looking for in the small town of Rab. This sleepy little village is home to less than 500 people, but it's rich with beautiful scenery and a wealth of charming and well-preserved churches.

Situated just off the coast of Croatia, the island of Rab is a mere 14 miles long, and the self-named town is its only settlement. But the convergence of historical architecture, beautiful scenery, and unique local events have made it a flashpoint for visitors from all around the world. But if you want to truly soak up the local flavor, a holiday home in Rab is the ideal choice. It allows you to see the surroundings up close and personal even when the holiday crowds make their departure.

The original settlement of Rab dates all the way back to 360 BC, and that long heritage has made the island a perfect spot for vacationers who want to dive head first into Croatia's history and culture. And if there's one thing the island has in abundance, it's churches.

St. Mary the Blessed - built in the 13th century - has the honor of being the largest church on the island, while the church of St. Justine has been converted into a museum housing religious artwork. The bell towers of the four main churches are well recognized symbols of the island, and they're an absolute must for history buffs.

While the architecture of Rab is notable, the island is just as well renowned for its natural scenery. Suha Punta Beach is one of the calmest stretches of waterfront in Croatia, and it's also a stunning example of the region's rugged natural splendor. But the raw cliff sides of Pudarica Beach can give Suha Punta a run for its money. Hikers of any age can enjoy the leisurely stroll of Rab-Maman and then take a dip in the clear bay at the end of their trek.

Life moves slower on in Rab, but that doesn't mean that the residents don't know how to have fun.

The town's reputation as a tourist destination has created a friendly and welcoming environment for visitors from around the world, but two local events are especially worthy of note.

Rapska Fjera takes place in late July and captures the customs of the island's medieval period, and the annual arbalest tournament provides an opportunity for the locals to test their skills with the archaic but once popular crossbow from the region. These crossbows hold a particular significance to the citizens of Rab, as they were used to defend the town from interlopers in the 11th century. These tournaments take place four times every year and are highlights of major religious celebrations like Assumption Day.
